Male Breast Reduction

Who is a candidate for male breast reduction surgery?

Men with large, heavy pendulous breasts are candidates for male breast reduction surgery. This condition is called gynecomastia. Sometimes gynecomastia is a result of a hormonal imbalance or medication or drug side effect. Also, some degree of this condition is common during early puberty. In most cases, gynecomastia during early puberty resolves spontaneously.

If your gynecomastia does not seem likely to resolve on its own, you may be a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery. As a result of this plastic surgery procedure, you may experience an improved self-image and a reduction in any social anxiety that you may experience. You may also have an easier time performing physical activities, including sports, fitness, and work activities.

How is the plastic surgery performed? What are the risks?

The procedure is performed at a fully licensed and accredited outpatient cosmetic surgery center. The procedure takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to perform. A male breast reduction involves removing the excess male breast tissue through liposuction, as well as direct excision. Most patients take a week off of work to recover. They may take a longer time off if the work requirements are strenuous.

A consultation with Dr. Yang at our Maryland or Virginia locations will help answer any questions you may have. The cosmetic surgeon will discuss with you your options for treatment procedures. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing.
