Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

What is Otoplasty?

Ear Pinning also known as Otoplasty, is cosmetic ear surgical procedure, that can dramatically improve the shape, position or proportion of your ears. It also will correct a defect in the ear structure that was present at birth, for example: overly large ears, protruding ears, and ear shape that becomes more noticeable as normal growth begins or misshapen ears caused by trauma or injury.

Ear surgery can be performed to correct a birth deformity of the ears, amend the damage caused by an accident to this area of the head, or simply alter the way a person looks from the front and in profile.

How is the otoplasty plastic surgery (ear surgery) procedure performed?

The otoplasty (ear surgery) is typically done under local anesthesia. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours. An incision is placed behind the ear, as Dr. Bennett Yang will then remove of a small section of skin. The underlying cartilage is then tightened and folded back to correct the forward position of the ear. Deep and surface level sutures are placed. Most patients can return to work in 2 to 3 days with a light headband. Patients may take a longer time off work if the job is physical or strenuous.

  • Normally Healthy, without any life-threatening illnesses or untreated chronic ear infections
  • Typically five years of age or older, as your child’s ear cartilage is stable enough for this procedure
